Wilma Taylor-Costen
Wilma Taylor-Costen serves as President of the Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA), where she supports the organization's mission and vision to advance maternal and child health equity, promote breastfeeding, and strengthen community-based support for Black families.
A lifelong educator and advocate, Taylor-Costen previously served in executive leadership within the Detroit Public Schools Community District, including the roles of Assistant Superintendent of Academics and Executive Director of Early Childhood Programs. Her tenure in public education reflects a continuum of service—from classroom teacher and department head to assistant principal and principal—demonstrating her commitment to academic excellence, equity, and family engagement. Among her signature initiatives, Dad’s Day in Preschool invited fathers into the classroom for a day of workshops and interactive learning, modeling the vital role of family participation in early childhood education.
Wilma is deeply committed to community action and social justice, championing causes that uplift and empower the most vulnerable citizens. Her service includes active participation in Life Remodeled Detroit, the Get Out the Vote Initiative, and volunteer efforts supporting women, children, elder care, and veterans. She continues to embody service through membership in Lions Club International, her role as a Leading Lady for the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS), and her long-standing affiliation with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She is also the past president of the Stork’s Nest Foundation, which provides education and resources to expectant mothers.
Her leadership extends to the Unity movement, where she has held several key positions in service to its mission and growth, including President of the Board of Directors for the Unity Urban Ministerial School, Vice President of the Unity Great Lakes Region Board of Directors, and member of the Unity Worldwide Ministries Mentorship and Credentialing Team. A graduate of the Unity Urban Ministerial School, Wilma continues to serve as a spiritual leader, teacher, and mentor, helping others awaken to their divine potential through education, prayer, and compassionate action.
Wilma is also the founder of The Sister Bag Project. This collaborative outreach initiative provides care bags for homeless and abused women, and H. Littleton Education Consultants, an organization dedicated to supporting professional growth and leadership among urban educators.
A proud alumna of Eastern Michigan University, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership. Grounded in the principles of self-awareness and self-care, she embraces practices that nurture spiritual and emotional well-being, including meditation, yoga, reading, and writing.
Outside of her professional and ministry work, Wilma enjoys antiquing, traveling, and exploring new adventures.Her life’s work reflects an unwavering dedication to education, service, and spiritual empowerment as a living example of leadership rooted in love, purpose, and community transformation.
