Black Mothers Breastfeeding Association is a national leader working to improve breastfeeding outcomes for Black families.
Since 2007, BMBFA has built and led community-based programs rooted in Detroit that are changing how breastfeeding support is delivered. We show up, grounded in trust, strong relationships, and real-life experiences.
Breastfeeding rates across the country have improved, but many Black families still face barriers in getting the care and support they need. BMBFA does not just respond to these challenges; we lead the way in solving them. Through peer-led breastfeeding clubs, a community-based doula workforce, and strong clinic-community partnerships - just to name a few - we have built a system that works for families.
Our work shows that when Black families have consistent, community-based support, breastfeeding outcomes improve. From Detroit to communities across the country, BMBFA is setting the standard by building a strong workforce, shaping policy, and creating new ways to support families.

The Birthing, Lactating, Inspiring & Supporting Series or B.L.I.S.S. is a welcoming and empowering space designed to support expectant and new mothers through every stage of pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. This ongoing educational series provides families with valuable information, practical tools, and emotional support to help them thrive during the perinatal journey.
Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Club (BMBFC) is the signature program of BMBFA. Launched in 2008, BMBFC began as a safe and supportive space for Black mothers to connect, share experiences, and build community around the journey of breastfeeding and motherhood. What started as a small local gathering has now expanded into a powerful network that continues to grow and uplift families across Detroit and beyond.
